A fireplace is a great place to curl up with family and friends, but it can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Thus far in 2023, the US Fire Administration has reported 1,710 home fire fatalities and 70 firefighter fatalities. To keep your loved ones safe, here are a few fire prevention and fireplace safety tips Rochester homeowners should keep in mind when operating a fireplace.
Winter Fireplace Safety: 5 Rules for the Home
- Clean and maintain your chimney regularly. Your chimney should be cleaned at least once a year to remove creosote, a compound formed in the burning process that can lead to chimney fires if not removed. At the same time, the chimney should be inspected and any repairs completed.
- Install and test your carbon monoxide alarm. This colorless, odorless gas is deadly, causing headaches, nausea and confusion before it suffocates you. A carbon monoxide alarm keeps your family safe.
- Use seasoned hardwood. Though it can be tempting to use Christmas trees or similar softwoods, these types of woods burn slowly and create a great deal of smoke as well as excessive creosote buildup. Only use hardwood that has been dried, or seasoned, for at least six months before use.
- Keep flammable items at least three feet from the fireplace. If sparks or coals roll out of the fireplace while loading wood into it, it can catch nearby objects on fire. If you have hardwood, a hearth rug can help keep the coals contained while you retrieve them.
- Make sure everyone in the family can use the fire extinguisher. Children as young as five can be taught to use a fire extinguisher, but they need to learn how before there’s an emergency. Take the time to review fire safety with younger family members to ensure they act appropriately.
